Order or Chaos?

The three-ring binder was on the floor by his desk. I was there to help this store owner get control of his accounting, and in particular his Accounts Receivable. When I didn't find an aging report in the computer, I asked him where the AR detail was. That was when he leaned over, reached down to the floor, and grabbed the binder.
It has been years now, but I can still remember the flutter of scraps of paper as they fell to the floor. Handwritten notes, yellow stickies, folded pages-it was all there. All dirty from their resting place on the floor, and now being roughly gathered up, stuffed back into the book and handed to me to make sense of it all. There were years of un-billed receivables, sporadically reviewed, and all in the "over 120" column...
